Google Glass was an experimental wearable computer created to gauge consumer appetite for a smartphone that sits on your face. Google launched a huge initiative called The Explorer Program as a beta test with influential members from all facets of culture. The goal was to figure out how these things worked in society so they could create a version that everyone would want. Issues around privacy, privilege and the rise of the insufferable ‘Glasshole’ tanked the consumer program and Glass went on to find success in the industrial sector instead.

As part of a creative team charged with finding examples of the true potential of Glass, I was able to see a lot of the moving ways it was empowering the world. One such example was with Alex Blazczuk, a recently paralyzed law student, amateur photographer and cat lover, who yearned for the freedom that she used to enjoy. She was on her way to a camping trip when a car accident took her mobility from her, so we got her friends together and re-created the trip. This was the first time she had been apart from her caregivers for more than a couple hours since her accident 18 months prior. The entire film was shot on Google Glass.
